Prodigal One
Lyrics:VERSE 1:
I left home with a heart of stone, thinking of no one else but me. I had my fun, but now it's done. And I'm beginning now to see what my Father has done for me. REFRAIN: Prodigal One, come home! You've been wandering far too long all on your own. Prodigal One, I'll wait here to hold you in my arms and dry your tears. By my side, there is nothing left to fear, So come home! VERSE 2: I turned away, refused to stay; thought it'd be better being free. But now I'm lost, and what's the cost? I'm beginning now to see what my Father has done for me. REFRAIN: Prodigal One, come home! You've been wandering far too long all on your own. Prodigal One, I'll wait here to hold you in my arms and dry your tears. By my side, there is nothing left to fear, So come home! BRIDGE: Father, I have sinned against Heaven and against You. Father, don't need to forgive me, just let me work for You. Please, I'm begging You. FINAL REFRAIN: Prodigal One, you've come home! You've been wandering far too long all on your own. Prodigal One, I've waited here to hold you in my arms and dry your tears. By my side, there is nothing left to fear. You were lost, but now you're found and now you're here. You've come home. |
Behind the Song:Looking back, I think I finished this song somewhere around February of 2013. The reason I can't totally remember when I finally finished it is because the idea of it was on my heart for so long!
It seemed like everywhere I went, the Prodigal Son parable was popping up left and right. I went to a Chris Tomlin concert and in the middle of the concert, a pastor did a reflection on the Prodigal Son parable, complete with a video presentation and everything. I went to a prayer service, and one of the readings was the Prodigal Son parable. I went to a Youth Conference on Long Island, and one of the reflections was on the Prodigal Son parable. I turned on K-LOVE on the radio in my car, there was someone giving a witness, referring to (guess what?) THE PRODIGAL SON PARABLE. It was following me everywhere! After the first few times it popped up, I thought it was a little strange and considered that maybe it was God giving me a little nudge to listen up. After I realized that I really couldn't escape it and it was following me everywhere, I considered trying to write a song about it. But I never really had enough time to sit down and write it and I kept procrastinating it, using my busy schedule as an excuse. Well, when it finally came to a Sunday when I was picking music for Mass at Hofstra and one of the readings was the Prodigal Son parable, I decided enough was enough. I picked the rest of the songs for the week and decided there was no more avoiding it this continual flood of Prodigal Son references in my life. I sat down with my guitar and decided I was going to take the time to write the song because it seemed like God was basically sending me a big flashing billboard sign to write something about the Prodigal Son parable. Once I sat down, it took me probably about an hour and I had completely finished writing the song, music and lyrics both coming at the same time. I made a rough recording of the song and went to Mass. Finally, I stopped getting flooded with Prodigal Son references, so I guess that was God's plan all along! |
